President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday congratulated Elavenil Valarivan, Vidarsa K Vinod and Sonam Uttam Maskar after the Indian women’s 10m air rifle team won the silver medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, opening India’s medal account at the Games.
India secured the team silver with a combined qualification score of 1898.0. China won the gold with 1904.2, while hosts Japan claimed the bronze with 1897.1.
“Heartiest congratulations to Elavenil Valarivan, Vidarsa K Vinod and Sonam Uttam Maskar on winning the silver medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Team event at the Asian Games 2026. Your commendable achievement has opened India’s medal account at the Games and brings immense pride to the nation. My best wishes for your continued success,” President Murmu said in a post on X.
Sonam led India’s qualification effort with an outstanding 634.1 to finish third. Elavenil qualified seventh with 633.5, while Vidarsa added 630.4 to finish 12th in the individual rankings.
Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated the trio for opening India’s medal tally at the Asian Games.
“India shoots open its Asian Games medal trail by winning a silver. Kudos to Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa K Vinod on winning the silver medal in Shooting 10 M Rifle Women (Team). Best wishes for future competitions,” Shah posted on X.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also hailed the performance, describing it as a “fantastic start” to India’s medal campaign and congratulating Elavenil, Sonam and Vidarsa on clinching silver.
China’s gold-medal winning team comprised qualification leader Wang Zifei, who scored 636.8, along with Han Jiayu (633.8) and Du Yuchen (633.6).
