The Miri-Piri Khalsa March, which began from Sri Akal Takht Sahib, moved into its third phase on Saturday as it departed from Gurdwara Sahib in Kartarpur, Jalandhar, amid the chanting of Sikh religious slogans and participation by a large number of devotees.
Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, and Hazoori Granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib Giani Gurminder Singh were among the prominent personalities present at the departure ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj urged the Sikh community to live in high spirits by taking guidance and support from Gurbani and the Guru’s teachings. He said prayer should remain an integral part of a Sikh’s life in both happiness and difficult times.
He emphasised the need to connect younger generations with Gurbani, Sikh identity and the Sikh way of life. He said the teachings of the Gurus promote equality and reject discrimination based on caste or social status.
Giani Gargajj said every Sikh should work to ensure that young people remain connected with their heritage, the teachings of the Gurus and Sikh history. He also stressed that preserving the Sikh identity and passing the values and traditions of Sikhi on to future generations is a collective responsibility.
He said Sikh families have a responsibility to safeguard the uncut hair and distinct Sikh identity of their children. These messages, he added, are being taken to villages and households through the Miri-Piri Khalsa March.
Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said the main objective of the march was to take the message of the Sikh Gurus to every household, promoting equality, justice, service, freedom from drugs and a life guided by Gurmat principles.
Dhami said Sikh institutions and the Khalsa Panth were facing attacks in subtle forms and urged the community to remain alert. He said the march had so far reached more than 700 villages and towns, with the widespread availability of drugs emerging as one of the major concerns.
He called upon socially conscious citizens to contribute to efforts against drug abuse and appealed to families to connect their children with Gurbani and Gurmat principles.
During the programme, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj and Advocate Dhami honoured the Panj Pyare and Nishan Sahib sevadars with siropas. Giani Gurminder Singh performed the service of placing the sacred saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in the palki.
A large number of devotees participated in the march, while the police administration offered a ceremonial salute in honour of Guru Sahib. At various stops, devotees welcomed the march with showers of flowers.
Several SGPC office-bearers, members, sewadars, preachers and other prominent personalities were also present during the programme.
