The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday clarified that a notice issued to former Election Commissioner S.S. Sandhu during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls does not mean that his name will be excluded from the final voters’ list.
The Commission said it had verified the facts and documents submitted by Sandhu and validated his electoral entry for inclusion in the Final Electoral Roll of Assembly Constituency 38 (Delhi Cantonment), scheduled for publication on November 11.
The clarification came after information about the notice issued to Sandhu circulated on social media.
According to the ECI, Sandhu’s electoral entry had been identified under the “Discrepancy in Name” category based on the details furnished in his Enumeration Form and with reference to the electoral roll of the last revision.
The Commission said notices are being issued to electors whose entries could not be linked with the electoral roll of the last revision or where logical discrepancies were detected during the linking process.
The ECI also clarified that names of members of the judiciary, public representatives, holders of declared offices and personalities from fields including arts, culture, journalism, sports and public service that had earlier been flagged in the electoral database have been included in the Draft Electoral Roll. This allows the necessary documents to be collected during the Claims and Objections period.
Electors receiving such notices can submit their replies and requisite documents to the concerned Electoral Registration Officer (ERO). The notices will be disposed of by October 29 after considering the documents submitted and verification conducted by the concerned Booth Level Officer (BLO), the Commission said.
The ECI said the notices were generated as part of its Standard Operating Procedures to facilitate document-based verification by designated BLOs and subsequent disposal by EROs.
Reiterating its commitment to a transparent, participative and inclusive electoral roll revision process, the Commission said its objective was to ensure that no eligible citizen is left out and no ineligible person is included in the electoral roll.
