The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Tehreek Tahafuz Aain Pakistan (TTAP) on Sunday condemned the detention of Aleema Khan, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, after Lahore authorities ordered her detention for 30 days under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law.
PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan called for Aleema Khan’s immediate release and said the party would announce its next course of action against the detention.
In a post on X, Gohar said Aleema Khan’s sister, Noreen Niazi, had informed him about the arrest. He maintained that PTI’s proposed march would remain peaceful and political and said the party was seeking to pursue its constitutional and political demands without confrontation or violence.
Gohar described Aleema Khan’s detention or house arrest under the MPO as a measure that could increase tension and urged authorities to stop such actions.
The statement came after an order issued by the Lahore Deputy Commissioner confirming Aleema Khan’s detention for 30 days under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960. The order also directed the detention of her driver, Muhammad Ameer, for 30 days, citing concerns related to public safety and maintenance of public order.
The TTAP also condemned the detention, describing it as an escalation of what it called a crackdown on political workers and their families. The alliance said Aleema Khan had been detained under Section 3 of the MPO despite there being no charges against her.
According to the alliance, such action has created fear among political workers and their families. It also alleged that the Punjab government was taking measures to disrupt political activity ahead of a protest scheduled for September 27.
Aleema Khan’s son, Shahrez Khan, alleged that his mother was taken away after leaving home on Sunday morning. He said she had been granted bail in all cases against her in Lahore and called on the authorities to disclose her whereabouts and secure her release.
Imran Khan’s son, Kasim Khan, also alleged that police had detained his aunt and demanded that her family and lawyers be allowed to meet her.
The allegations by family members and political groups could not independently establish the circumstances surrounding Aleema Khan’s detention beyond the Lahore Deputy Commissioner’s order.
