Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president and legislator Tariq Hameed Karra on Sunday said the Congress would continue to raise genuine public concerns in the Assembly despite its alliance with the ruling National Conference (NC).

Karra made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting of Congress legislators held ahead of the Assembly session scheduled to begin on Monday.

He said the party’s alliance with the NC would not prevent it from raising issues concerning the people or pressing for their early resolution.

“We will take up genuine concerns and ensure they are expedited,” Karra said.

He emphasised that the Assembly provides a platform for legislators to raise questions and seek action on issues affecting the public, irrespective of whether they are brought up by members of the ruling party or the Opposition.

Karra said the Congress legislature party meeting was convened to discuss the agenda and preparations for the upcoming session.

Asked about recent differences between the Congress and the NC over issues such as Vande Mataram and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Karra said the party’s position should be viewed in the wider context of its alliance with the National Conference.

He said the Congress had entered the alliance as a “principled stand” while keeping the larger political picture in mind.

“The alliance does not mean that we will not raise people’s issues. Being in an alliance does not mean that we will not talk about people’s legitimate demands. So there is no connection between that and this,” Karra said.

Reports have suggested that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah offered the Congress a berth in the J&K Cabinet. However, the party has maintained that it will not join the government unless statehood is restored to Jammu and Kashmir.

Karra’s remarks come ahead of the Assembly session, with the Congress seeking to maintain its position on public issues while continuing its political alliance with the National Conference.
