Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he and US President Donald Trump have agreed to meet in New York, describing the proposed talks as potentially significant as Kyiv continues diplomatic engagement with Washington over the conflict.
“We agreed to meet in New York, and this meeting could change a lot. There is diplomatic momentum,” Zelensky said in a post on X after speaking with Trump.
Zelensky did not announce a date for the meeting or specify what the two leaders would seek to agree on. His post outlined areas under discussion but did not announce a peace agreement or a timetable for implementing any measures.
Describing the conversation as important, Zelensky said the pursuit of peace remained central to Ukraine’s engagement with the US.
“The peace track is our number one priority,” he said.
He identified energy security, food security and the protection of human life as areas being considered alongside possible measures to reduce tensions. However, he did not provide details of individual proposals or explain how they could be implemented.
“There are ideas for de-escalation steps and for addressing fundamental security issues – energy security, food security, and the protection of human life,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian President also said Kyiv was prepared to take what he described as “really serious steps” while continuing its work with US officials. He did not specify those steps or say whether they would depend on reciprocal action from Russia.
Zelensky thanked Trump for sending US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Kyiv, saying their visit had enabled detailed discussions and provided them with a firsthand view of the situation in Ukraine.
“We went through the key details thoroughly, and they saw the situation in Ukraine firsthand,” he said.
Separately, Zelensky thanked Trump for signing into law legislation he referred to as the “Lindsey Graham bill”. His post did not provide the legislation’s formal title, outline its provisions or explain its connection to the diplomatic discussions.
“We all concur – there must be peace. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine! Thank you to everyone who’s helping!” Zelensky said.
