Yemen’s Houthi group has claimed that 28 airstrikes hit three provinces over the past 24 hours as fighting between Houthi forces and troops aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognised government continued across multiple fronts.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said in a statement on Sunday that fighter jets operating from Saudi air bases at Khamis Mushait and Taif carried out strikes in Taiz in southwestern Yemen, oil-rich Marib in the northeast and Al-Jawf in the north.
Sarea claimed that the latest strikes took the cumulative number of airstrikes since the latest escalation began to 760. Saudi Arabia has not immediately commented on the figures.
Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV reported that an airstrike struck a telecommunications tower in Al-Jawf, while areas of northern Saada province along the Saudi border came under artillery fire.
The reported airstrikes came amid continued ground fighting in southwestern Yemen, where government forces and Houthi fighters have been contesting frontline positions.
A government military source told Xinhua that government forces had recaptured several positions in western Taiz. However, the broader frontline remained largely unchanged amid intense fighting.
The Houthis have also recently reported gains along Yemen’s southwestern Red Sea coast. They captured the port city of Mocha in Taiz province on September 10 before advancing south to seize Dhubab and Mayyun Island in the Bab al-Mandab Strait on September 11, according to the report.
Government forces are now attempting to prevent further Houthi advances towards the strategic waterway.
Yemen’s conflict began in late 2014 after the Houthis seized Sanaa and large parts of northern Yemen. Saudi Arabia subsequently led a military coalition that intervened in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognised government.
The latest escalation represents a significant intensification of fighting after a UN-brokered truce in 2022 largely brought an end to major hostilities.
