The fourth annual two-day Gurmat Symposium was organised at Rochester Hills Gurdwara Sahib in the Detroit metropolitan area, bringing together more than 125 children and youth from the United States and Canada for Gurbani Kirtan, Tabla and Gatka competitions.
Participants aged between six and 19 delivered more than 150 performances during the symposium. They were divided into three age groups for the various competitions.
Along with children and youth from Michigan, participants travelled from Dayton and Columbus in Ohio and Windsor in Canada to take part in the event.
Sharing details of the symposium, Bhai Surjit Singh said children participating in the Kirtan competitions performed Gurbani in prescribed Raags. The performances featured Tabla and Harmonium accompaniment, along with traditional Sikh instruments such as the Dilruba.
A large number of participants also showcased their skills in Tabla performances, while Gatka competitions formed another important part of the two-day programme.
Bhai Surjit Singh said a key objective of the initiative was to connect the younger generation with Sikh musical heritage, particularly the tradition of Raag-based Gurbani Kirtan.
He said it was encouraging to see children learning Gurbani Kirtan in prescribed Raags, developing a connection with the Sikh musical tradition and helping carry it forward to the next generation.
He expressed appreciation for the participating children and their parents, teachers, judges, members of the Sangat, Sevadars and organisers, crediting their collective support, hard work and Seva for the successful conduct of the symposium.
Members of the Sangat also appreciated the performances and the initiative, which highlighted the enthusiasm among children and youth for Gurbani, Kirtan and traditional Sikh music.
At the conclusion of the symposium, medals and other awards were presented to the participating children and youth. Guru Ka Langar was also served to the Sangat on both days.
