External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will lead India’s delegation to New York for the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and is scheduled to address the General Debate on September 26.

Jaishankar’s address is scheduled for the afternoon session, according to the revised provisional list of speakers for the General Debate.

During his visit, Jaishankar is also expected to participate in a series of plurilateral and bilateral meetings, as India engages with leaders and representatives attending the high-level UNGA week.

The 81st session of the General Assembly opened on September 8, while the high-level General Debate will be held from September 22 to 26 and on September 28 at UN Headquarters in New York.

The theme of this year’s General Debate is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman is presiding over the 81st session.

The annual General Debate provides heads of state, heads of government and other senior representatives of the 193 UN member states an opportunity to outline their priorities and positions on international issues.

The high-level week will also feature meetings on climate action and a just transition, the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development, the threats posed by sea-level rise, and pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.

A high-level plenary on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is scheduled for September 29, following the General Debate.

The General Assembly’s high-level week brings together world leaders to discuss global cooperation, sustainable development, peace and other interconnected international challenges. The UN has said the 81st session will focus on revitalising global cooperation and advancing collective action for peace, dignity and equality on a healthy planet.

Jaishankar’s September 26 address will mark India’s participation in the high-level General Debate as countries present their positions on major global developments and priorities.
