The Indian women’s table tennis team produced a commanding 3-0 victory over Pakistan to top Group F and secure a place in the quarterfinals of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Monday.
India completed their group-stage campaign with three wins from three matches, finishing at the top of Group F.
Sutirtha Mukherjee gave India a flying start, defeating Aleena Khan 11-3, 11-3, 11-4 in just 10 minutes. Sutirtha, who won a bronze medal in the women’s doubles at the Hangzhou Asian Games, comfortably put India ahead.
Asian Games debutant Syndrela Das then extended the lead with a 11-6, 11-7, 11-5 win over Kalsoom Khan.
Sreeja Akula completed the clean sweep by defeating Fatima Khan 11-4, 11-4, 11-5.
India’s men’s team, meanwhile, opened its Group F campaign with a 3-0 win over Indonesia on Sunday. Sathiyan Gnanasekaran defeated Muhammad Negara 3-0, Manav Thakkar beat Muhammad Junindra 3-2, while Manush Shah overcame Affan Pratama 3-0.
The men’s side subsequently suffered a 0-3 defeat against Iran. Manush Shah, Manav Thakkar and Harmeet Desai all lost their respective matches. India will face Pakistan in their final group tie later on Monday.
Seven gold medals are at stake in table tennis across men’s and women’s singles, doubles, team events and mixed doubles. The team competitions are being held first, followed by the individual events, with the final table tennis medal events scheduled for September 28.
India have won three Asian Games table tennis medals, all bronze. The country’s breakthrough came at Jakarta 2018, where the men’s team won India’s first-ever table tennis medal at the Asian Games. Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra subsequently added another bronze in mixed doubles.
At Hangzhou 2023, Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee won bronze in the women’s doubles, giving India its first Asian Games medal in the event. Sutirtha is part of India’s women’s team at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
