A large gathering of people assembled at MS Farm in Basti Peerdaad, Jalandhar, on Sunday to pay their last respects to veteran leader and former Punjab Cabinet Minister Chuni Lal Bhagat at a Shradhanjali Sabha organised in his memory.

Aam Aadmi Party Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia, Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann, wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab AAP president and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian and Dr Ravjot Singh, Advisor to the Punjab Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department, were among those who paid tribute to the departed leader.

Working President of AAP Deepak Bali, MLA Amansher Singh Sherry Kalsi, MLA Balkar Singh, MLA Brahm Shankar Jimpa, Jalandhar Mayor Vineet Dhir, Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia, Commissioner of Police Satinder Singh and SSP Harvinder Singh Virk were also present, along with other public representatives, officials, social leaders and people from different sections of society.

Remembering Bhagat, Aman Arora, Harpal Cheema, Gurmeet Singh Khudian, Hardeep Singh Mundian, Manish Sisodia and Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann described him as a “towering personality in Punjab’s politics” who had earned a distinguished place through hard work and honesty.

They expressed condolences to the Bhagat family and said the demise of its head was an irreparable loss. They prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul and strength for the bereaved family.

From Business to Public Life

The speakers recalled that Chuni Lal Bhagat came to Jalandhar after Partition, where his family established a sports goods export business and built a name in the industry.

He subsequently entered active politics and served as Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha before becoming a Cabinet Minister and handling important portfolios.

The gathering at the Shradhanjali Sabha, they said, reflected the personal bond Bhagat had developed with people over decades of public life.

Bhagat, who died at the age of 93 following a prolonged illness, had served multiple terms as MLA from Jalandhar West. During his political career, he handled portfolios including Local Bodies, Medical Education, and Forest and Wildlife Preservation.

The speakers remembered him for his accessibility, integrity, transparency and commitment to public service. They said his doors remained open to people irrespective of their political or social affiliations.

His son, Punjab Cabinet Minister Mohinder Bhagat, is carrying forward the family’s public service legacy. The ministers and AAP leadership assured Mohinder Bhagat and his family of their support during the period of grief.

Among those attending the Shradhanjali Sabha were Pawan Teenu, Chairman, Punjab Cooperative Agriculture Development Bank; Kimti Bhagat, Vice Chairman, Punjab Gau Sewa Commission; Mangal Bassi, Chairman, Punjab Agri Export Corporation Limited; Ramneek Singh Randhawa, Chairman, Jalandhar Improvement Trust; Abdul Bahri Salmani, Chairman, Muslim Welfare Board; Deputy Mayor Malkeet Singh; Halqa Incharge Nitin Kohli; and representatives of the Sant Samaj.
