The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday criticised Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over an incident involving a comedian who allegedly mimicked Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ event in Indore, with several BJP leaders taking jibes at the Congress leader.
Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal accused Gandhi of misleading students and alleged that his remarks and conduct amounted to an insult to Indian culture and civilisation.
“He misleads students and attempts to spread anarchy,” Meghwal said, urging the Congress leader to speak responsibly. He also alleged that criticism of Prime Minister Modi in such a context amounted to criticism of India and an insult to its civilisation and culture.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also took a swipe at Gandhi, saying the Congress leader should consider becoming a stand-up comedian. Fadnavis alleged that Gandhi had left his party with little political work and could instead find employment in comedy.
Former Union Minister and BJP leader Prakash Javadekar accused the Congress of crossing what he described as the limits of political decency. He alleged that Gandhi repeatedly targets Modi at public meetings and claimed that such criticism was increasing public sympathy for the Prime Minister.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey criticised the event, describing it as “Jhooth Ki Goonj” and alleging that Gandhi had suffered repeated electoral setbacks.
BJP leader Virendra Sachdeva said Gandhi’s programmes were more focused on organising events than addressing political issues or understanding public sentiment. He contrasted this with what he described as Prime Minister Modi’s message reaching different sections of society, including young people.
Another BJP leader, T.R. Sriniwas, also mocked the event, saying Gandhi could end up putting comedy shows out of business. He questioned the participation of a comedian on a platform presented as a student event.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari, however, defended Gandhi and the programme. He said the large gathering of students and their enthusiasm demonstrated the success of the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ event, while taking a swipe at the BJP.
