Ahead of World Mental Health Day, television actress Adrija Roy has spoken about the importance of prioritising mental well-being, setting healthy boundaries and recognising when it is time to step back from the pressures of everyday life.
The Anupamaa actress said people often feel compelled to appear fine even when they are struggling, largely because of the fear of being judged or misunderstood. She stressed that acknowledging difficult emotions can be an important first step towards feeling better.
“We often feel that we have to look fine even when we are going through something. Saying ‘I’m not okay’ can feel difficult because we are scared of being judged or misunderstood. But I feel there is nothing wrong in admitting that you are struggling. Sometimes, just accepting how you feel is the first step towards feeling better,” Adrija said.
She also spoke about dealing with public scrutiny and opinions, saying not every comment deserves to affect one’s peace of mind.
“You cannot take every comment personally. Everyone will have an opinion about you, but you know yourself better than anyone else. I try to focus on the people and things that genuinely matter to me and not allow every outside opinion to disturb my peace,” she said.
For Adrija, losing interest in things that usually bring happiness is one of the signs that it may be time to slow down. She said physical and mental exhaustion should not be dismissed as laziness.
“When you feel physically and mentally exhausted and everything starts feeling like a task, that is when you need to pause. Taking a little time off does not mean you are lazy. Sometimes you need to slow down to come back stronger,” she said.
The actress also emphasised the importance of setting boundaries and learning to say no when something does not feel right.
“I remind myself that I cannot make everyone happy all the time. I have learned to set boundaries and say no when something does not feel right for me. It took time, but I realised that protecting your peace is not selfish,” Adrija said.
Reflecting on difficult phases, she added that circumstances change with time and people need to give themselves space rather than expecting immediate answers.
“One thing I have learned is that every phase passes. You may not have all the answers immediately, but you have to trust yourself and give yourself time,” she said.
Adrija also urged people to maintain perspective while using social media and avoid comparing their lives with the carefully curated experiences of others. She stressed that staying connected with real life, loved ones and oneself is more important than trying to project perfection online.
“Peace matters more than appearing perfect,” she said.
Adrija Roy is currently seen as Raahi in Anupamaa, which stars Rupali Ganguly in the titular role.
