Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reaffirmed Tehran’s willingness to pursue dialogue to protect its rights, while making clear that Iran will not accept negotiations under coercion.
In an interview published on the website of his office on Friday, Pezeshkian defended the government’s decision to enter talks with the United States and sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the war.
Pezeshkian said Iran would continue honouring its commitments as long as Washington fulfilled its obligations under the agreement.
“Wherever they fail to fulfil their commitment, we have no obligation to continue,” he said.
His remarks came amid uncertainty over the future of the negotiations and reports of differences within Iran’s leadership over the MoU.
Earlier this week, Pezeshkian also rejected speculation that he was stepping down, saying he would continue working “resolutely”.
Iran and the United States signed the MoU in June, with the agreement providing for negotiations within a 60-day period to work towards a final settlement. However, renewed tensions between the two countries have cast doubt over the continuation of the talks.
Meanwhile, two explosions were reported on Thursday night on Qeshm Island in Iran’s Hormozgan province. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that the blasts occurred amid a confrontation between Iranian armed forces and what it described as “hostile enemy targets” near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.
According to sources cited by Tasnim, the explosions were heard at around 9:40 p.m. local time (1810 GMT). The agency said the Iranian naval forces would announce details of what it described as the “achievements” of the confrontation in the following hours.
Ahmad Nafisi, Hormozgan’s deputy governor for political, security and social affairs, said no strike or incident had been reported on Qeshm Island or in the provincial capital Bandar Abbas.
He said relevant authorities were investigating to determine the cause of the explosions.
