Four cadres of the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) have surrendered before the Assam Rifles in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district, handing over weapons and ammunition, officials said on Saturday.
According to a Defence spokesperson, the surrender followed an intelligence-based operation conducted along the Chupkhao Track in Longding district. The operation was preceded by sustained intelligence gathering, surveillance, operational planning and engagement with the insurgents.
The four cadres surrendered their weapons and also deposited ammunition and other war-like stores with the security forces. Officials described the development as a significant setback to the outfit’s operational capabilities in the region.
The Defence spokesperson said the operation reflected the effectiveness of sustained counter-insurgency efforts, combined with outreach aimed at encouraging insurgents to abandon violence and return to the mainstream.
The security forces said the latest surrender could further strengthen the security environment in the region and encourage other insurgents to choose the path of peace and development.
The development comes amid continued operations against ULFA-I in the Northeast.
Recently, two alleged cadres of the banned outfit were arrested in Assam’s Tinsukia district in a joint intelligence-based operation involving Assam Police and central security agencies.
The two accused, identified as Humenjyoti Baruah, alias Siyor Asom, 27, and Papu Moran, alias Manoj Asom, 30, were arrested at Jagun following specific intelligence inputs. Police described both as self-styled second lieutenants of ULFA-I.
Officials said a preliminary investigation indicated that the duo had allegedly entered Assam from Myanmar through Jairampur in Arunachal Pradesh before travelling towards Tinsukia.
Security personnel intercepted their Swift car at Jagun Bazaar and allegedly recovered two AK-56 rifles, 172 rounds of ammunition, two hand grenades, backpacks, forest survival supplies and a medical kit containing syringes and opioid-based medicines.
Officials alleged that the two had been assigned to carry out an indiscriminate attack targeting civilians in Tinsukia town. The investigation is continuing.
