A 30-year-old man was arrested in Delhi’s Shahdara district for allegedly possessing an illegal Beretta pistol, four live cartridges and two magazines, police said on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Raj Singh, was arrested on August 6 by a team from Farsh Bazar Police Station during preventive patrolling near New Sadak Road, close to Guru Gobind Singh University.
According to police, the team had received specific information that a man carrying an illegal firearm would travel in a white car from the Vivek Vihar side towards Bhikam Singh Colony between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Acting on the input, police established a checking point at the location and intercepted a white car approaching from Vivek Vihar. During a search of the driver, officers allegedly recovered an Italian-made Beretta pistol.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of two more live cartridges and two magazines from the dashboard. Police said a total of four live .32-calibre cartridges and two magazines were seized along with the firearm.
Singh, a resident of Harsh Vihar in Delhi, was booked in FIR No. 283/26 registered on August 6 under Section 25 of the Arms Act at Farsh Bazar Police Station.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly told investigators that he had kept the firearm as a hobby and to show off.
Police are now investigating the source of the weapon, how it was procured and whether Singh has links with anyone involved in the illegal arms trade or other criminal activities.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of senior Shahdara police officers. Police said the recovery demonstrated the effectiveness of preventive patrolling and would help investigators trace the weapon’s supply chain.
