An 18-year-old youth went missing after being swept away by a strong current in a flooded drain near Priyanka Camp in Aali Village under Delhi’s Sarita Vihar police station area, with rescue teams continuing efforts to locate him.
The incident took place on Friday night as the youth, identified as Ankit, son of Sunil and a resident of E-13, Bhim Colony, Ali Vihar, was returning home from Noida amid heavy rainfall in the Delhi-NCR region.
According to Delhi Police, a PCR call regarding the incident was received at Sarita Vihar police station on August 7. SI Roshan Lal, accompanied by beat staff, reached Priyanka Camp Nala in Madanpur Khadar, where the caller, Manish, son of Raj Kishor and a resident of Bhim Colony, Ali Vihar, was present.
During questioning, Manish told police that Ankit slipped near the drain because of waterlogging and was swept away by the strong flow of water.
Heavy rainfall had caused water levels in the area to rise rapidly, resulting in a powerful current in the drain. Local residents immediately raised an alarm and attempted to rescue the youth, but the force of the water prevented them from reaching him.
Police subsequently launched a search operation with assistance from the DDMA East Rescue Team and Delhi Fire Service, including Fire Tender WT-74.
Despite search efforts continuing through the night and into the following day, Ankit had not been traced. Rescue personnel were searching the drain and adjoining areas, while local residents and volunteers were also assisting in the operation.
Officials said persistent rain, strong currents, darkness and debris inside the drain were making the search difficult.
The incident comes amid continued heavy rainfall across Delhi-NCR, with several areas of Delhi, Noida and Haryana witnessing waterlogging, traffic disruptions and difficulties in normal movement over the past two days.
