A religious gathering at a school in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district was disrupted after right-wing activists alleged that the event was being used for religious conversions, prompting police to initiate an inquiry into the claims.
The incident took place on Friday evening at Holy Family Convent School on Bina Road in Khurai town, where Christians from several states had reportedly gathered for a religious programme.
Members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other right-wing organisations reached the school later in the night and alleged that people had been brought there for conversion to Christianity. They staged a protest, following which police teams from Khurai, Bina, Khimlasa and nearby areas reached the spot.
Senior police officers intervened and brought the situation under control. Bina SDOP Ajay Kumar Sankat, along with Khurai Rural police station in-charge Santosh Singh Dangi and Khurai Urban police station in-charge Yogendra Singh Dangi, were among the officers who reached the school.
Police assured the protesters that the allegations would be investigated and that appropriate action would follow if any violation of law was established.
The protesters claimed that around 120 beds had been arranged on the school premises and that men, women and children from Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand were staying there. They alleged that the gathering was part of an attempt to convert people to Christianity.
Those attending the programme, however, told officials that they were Christians and had gathered for a religious event.
Khurai Block Education Officer R.S. Sharma said officials had spoken to the school management and people present at the premises. “The people present there told us that they are Christians. Information regarding the matter is being gathered,” he said.
Police said they had not reached any conclusion and would verify the identities of those present, the purpose of the gathering and the activities conducted there. Authorities will also examine whether the programme had the required permission and whether any law was violated.
The inquiry is expected to continue on Saturday.
