Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor turned nostalgic as the iconic patriotic action drama Karma completed 40 years on Saturday, recalling his experience of working with legendary actor Dilip Kumar and an ensemble cast in the 1986 blockbuster.
Marking the film’s 40th anniversary, Anil shared a montage of memorable moments from Karma on X, describing the project as a defining phase of his career and its sets as a learning experience.
“Karma came at a pivotal moment in my journey, and every day on that set was a masterclass,” he wrote.
Recalling his experience of working alongside Dilip Kumar and Naseeruddin Shah, Anil said the opportunity was “equal parts intimidating and inspiring”. He also credited filmmaker Subhash Ghai and the film’s ensemble cast for making the project one of the greatest privileges of his career.
“Thank you for keeping Karma alive and cherished for four decades,” Anil added.
Directed and produced by Subhash Ghai under Mukta Arts, Karma was released on August 8, 1986, and went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters of that year.
The film featured Dilip Kumar, Nutan, Naseeruddin Shah, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Poonam Dhillon, Dara Singh, Anupam Kher, Tom Alter, Beena Banerjee, Paresh Rawal and Shakti Kapoor.
The story centres on Jailor Rana Vishwa Pratap Singh, played by Dilip Kumar, whose family is destroyed by dreaded terrorist Dr Michael Dang, portrayed by Anupam Kher. Determined to bring Dang down, Rana recruits three prisoners — Johnny (Jackie Shroff), Baiju (Naseeruddin Shah) and Ajju (Anil Kapoor) — for a dangerous mission against the terrorist and his network.
Karma also became a major musical success, with Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s soundtrack adding to the film’s enduring popularity. Songs including Dil Diya Hai Jaan Bhi Denge, Aye Watan Tere Liye, Na Jaiyo Pardes, Maine Rab Se Tujhe and De Daru continue to remain popular among music lovers.
