US President Donald Trump has said Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine, while suggesting that another bilateral meeting between the two leaders could take place.
Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One for a trip to Dallas on Wednesday, according to a transcript provided by CQ.
“We had a great conversation,” Trump said when asked about his latest discussion with Putin.
“He is wanting to make a deal. And if Zelensky is wanting to make a deal, that would be very nice,” Trump said, referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Asked what was holding up an agreement, Trump pointed to the strained relationship between Putin and Zelensky.
“The holdup is two people that hate each other,” Trump said, adding that he believed the animosity between the two leaders was the main obstacle to peace efforts.
Trump did not disclose when his conversation with Putin took place, how long it lasted or what proposals were discussed.
Asked what had changed and why he believed progress could now be possible, Trump cited his long experience of dealing with people and negotiating agreements.
“I know about deals, and these are two people that are tired of fighting,” he said.
Trump also indicated that another bilateral meeting with Putin could be held, although he did not provide a possible date or venue.
“It could happen. We had a good conversation. It could happen,” Trump said.
Highlighting the continuing loss of life in the conflict, Trump said the scale of casualties underscored the need for an agreement.
“Too many people are dying in that war, 25,000 last month,” he said.
