Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao on Wednesday wrote to Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in Italian, seeking his intervention in the release of pending college fee reimbursements and what he described as a deepening education crisis in the state.
Rao said he chose to write the letter in Rahul Gandhi’s “mother tongue” as repeated protests, hunger strikes, arrests, police action and appeals by students to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had failed to draw the Congress leadership’s attention to the issue.
According to Rao, nearly 40 lakh students, particularly those from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and economically weaker sections, are affected by outstanding fee reimbursements estimated at Rs 15,000 crore.
He alleged that delays in payments had led educational institutions to withhold students’ certificates, leaving many unable to pursue higher education or seek employment. He also claimed that colleges were struggling to meet operational expenses, with some employees receiving only half their salaries.
Rao further alleged that students and BJP leaders faced arrests and lathi charges while protesting over the issue. He said he was arrested four times within 10 days for raising his voice in support of the students and that the government had denied permission for the venue of his proposed hunger strike, forcing him to hold it at the BJP state headquarters.
The BJP chief also accused the Congress government of failing to fulfil commitments made in its Youth Declaration, including unemployment allowances, job promises, recruitment schedules and Vidya Bharosa Cards, despite the government completing 1,000 days in office.
Rao urged Rahul Gandhi to intervene and exert pressure on Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to immediately clear the outstanding fee reimbursements and take urgent measures to address the state’s education crisis.
