Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel has “absolute control” over a swathe of territory inside Syria stretching from Mount Hermon to the Yarmouk River, while vowing that his government is determined to bring down Iran’s leadership.
Netanyahu made the remarks on Wednesday during a visit to Israeli troops stationed inside Syria. Accompanied by Defence Minister Israel Katz and Deputy Chief of Staff Tamir Yadai, he said Israel would not allow what he described as a “terror army” to establish itself along the country’s border.
“We control the entire area from the summit of Mount Hermon to the Yarmouk, and from here to the Mediterranean Sea — absolute control unlike anything we have had before,” Netanyahu said in a video released by his office.
He also claimed that Israel was “very close” to defeating Iran’s government and reiterated his commitment to achieving that objective.
Netanyahu had made similar remarks on Sunday, saying the end of the Iranian regime was near and that it was “fighting for its life”. Speaking at a Rosh Hashanah toast during a government meeting, he said Israel had achieved significant military gains with US support.
According to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, Netanyahu said Israel and the United States had succeeded in addressing what he called an existential threat, including by targeting Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities and weakening the “Iranian axis”.
“We are determined to defend ourselves; we are determined to strike our enemies,” Netanyahu said, warning Iran against attacking Israel. He added that any such attack would result in a response Iran “cannot even imagine”.
Netanyahu also described Israel as the strongest power in the Middle East and issued a direct warning to its adversaries.
“I say to our enemies: Do not try us,” he said, asserting that the Israeli people know how to unite during periods of crisis and that the country is currently the region’s strongest power.
