India all-rounders Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy have been deemed fit for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, beginning September 13, and are expected to join the squad in New Delhi on Thursday.
Both players have cleared their fitness assessments and match simulations at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, according to a source tracking the developments.
Sundar had missed India’s recent two-Test series in Sri Lanka after sustaining a hamstring injury during the second ODI against England in Cardiff in July. Reddy, meanwhile, last represented India in the home ODI series against Afghanistan in June before aggravating a left quadriceps injury. The setback subsequently ruled him out of tours of Ireland, England and Sri Lanka.
There is, however, still uncertainty over the availability of Jasprit Bumrah for the Afghanistan series. The pace spearhead has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury while fielding during the second ODI against England.
Seam-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana is another fitness concern after sustaining a hamstring injury during the England tour in July. If either Bumrah or Rana is unavailable, India pacer Prince Yadav could be considered for a late addition to the squad.
The Afghanistan series will provide the Shreyas Iyer-led Indian side with an important preparation window ahead of its departure for Japan. It will also be India’s first bilateral T20I series against the Ibrahim Zadran-led Afghanistan side.
India are scheduled to play a solitary T20I against Japan at the Sano International Cricket Ground on September 22 before beginning their Asian Games gold medal defence at Korogi Sports Park on September 28.
Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Tilak Varma are expected to join the national squad in New Delhi after completing their commitments in the ongoing Duleep Trophy final in Chennai. Their arrival will depend on when the final at Chepauk concludes with a drawn result.
