Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha on Wednesday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discussed India’s performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, preparations for the upcoming Asian Games in Japan and the country’s efforts to strengthen its bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
The former track and field athlete said the meeting focused on India’s successful Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow and the roadmap for the Asian Games, while reaffirming the IOA’s commitment to India’s candidature for the 2036 Olympics.
“Had a productive meeting with Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji. Briefed him on the success of the Commonwealth Games 2026 and our preparations for the upcoming Asian Games in Japan. I also reaffirmed that no stone is being left unturned in our endeavour to strengthen India’s candidature to host the 2036 Olympic Games,” Usha wrote on X.
She added that under the leadership and support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India was steadily emerging as a global sporting powerhouse.
India’s performance in Glasgow has provided further momentum for preparations for the next major multi-sport event. The Indian contingent finished fourth in the overall medal tally with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze.
Boxing emerged as one of India’s strongest disciplines at the Games, with the country winning seven gold medals and 10 medals overall in the sport.
India’s para-athletes also delivered their best-ever Commonwealth Games performance, securing seven medals, including three gold.
The focus will now shift to the Asian Games in Japan, with India seeking to build on the momentum generated by its Glasgow campaign.
Beyond competing at major international events, the IOA is also working to advance India’s bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, with Ahmedabad proposed as the host city.
India submitted its Letter of Intent to the International Olympic Committee’s Future Host Commission in October 2024. Since then, preparations have focused on strengthening sports infrastructure and demonstrating the country’s ability to host major international competitions.
India’s 2036 Olympic ambitions have gained further significance with Ahmedabad set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. The event is expected to provide another opportunity for India to showcase its organisational capabilities and strengthen its credentials for the Olympic bid.
