A street vendor in Delhi has approached the Delhi High Court seeking to restrain the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) from holding a proposed protest at Central Park in Connaught Place on October 16, claiming the gathering could disrupt commercial activities, cause traffic congestion and inflict financial losses on local traders.
The matter was mentioned before Acting Chief Justice Nitin W. Sambre on Thursday by senior advocate Sacchin Puri, who sought urgent interim intervention ahead of the proposed demonstration in the heart of the national capital.
Puri argued that the protest could disrupt normal life across Connaught Place, particularly as it coincides with the Dussehra weekend. He submitted that the gathering could effectively shut down parts of the commercial hub, affecting shopkeepers, businesses and the movement of people.
Taking note of the submissions, the High Court observed that the Supreme Court was already hearing related matters. It asked the senior counsel to return at 2.30 p.m. with details of the proceedings and copies of the orders passed by the apex court on Thursday.
The petition has been filed by Anil Kumar Gupta, a street vendor at Palika Bazar in Connaught Place. He has sought directions to prevent CJP from organising protests, demonstrations, marches or gatherings at Central Park or other locations not officially designated for such activities.
The petitioner has also sought a broader restriction on protests in Central Delhi, including Connaught Place, citing the potential impact on public life and commercial establishments.
The proposed demonstration follows a call by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke for people to assemble at Central Park at 5 p.m. on Friday under the slogan “Lehra Do Tiranga”. In a video message posted on X on Wednesday, Dipke urged people to wave the national flag in protest against the arrest of the party’s co-conveners, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
Das and Ranka were sent to five-day judicial custody on Wednesday in connection with a trespassing case linked to Jantar Mantar. Another CJP leader, Ajinkya Shinde, was released on a personal bond.
The three party members had been placed under preventive arrest following allegations of trespassing at Jantar Mantar, which has been de-notified as a designated protest site. They were booked in connection with alleged trespassing, violation of bond conditions and obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their duties.
