Two-time Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo has set her sights on challenging the women’s 400m world record as she prepares for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, while keeping open the possibility of pursuing an Olympic medal in the 200m.
Miller-Uibo, the International Event Ambassador for the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon (VDHM) 2026, shared her ambitions at a press conference in New Delhi ahead of the event’s 21st edition, scheduled for Sunday. She will attend the World Athletics Gold Label Road Race to cheer on and support the participants.
“I have won every title there is in the 400m, so for me it is now about setting new goals. I would love to give the world record a crack. In recent years we have seen women go under 48 seconds, and I believe I am more than capable of doing that as well. If we keep racing each other, I think we can push each other towards it,” Miller-Uibo said.
On her first visit to India, the Bahamian sprinter also spoke about the wider significance of the Delhi Half Marathon, highlighting its role in bringing communities together and encouraging participation in causes beyond sport.
“I am really looking forward to it. It is bigger than just running. It is a great community, and people can pledge their support for different causes. It brings everyone out and unites people here in India,” she said.
Welcoming the expected increase in participation, particularly among women, Miller-Uibo expressed hope that this year’s race would inspire more women to participate in future editions and take their first steps towards achieving their ambitions.
Miller-Uibo, who welcomed a son in 2023 and a daughter in 2025, has spent the current season rebuilding her speed in Nassau, the Bahamian capital, under the guidance of her father, who coaches her. She said returning to competition after two pregnancies required patience and a gradual rebuilding of her athletic abilities.
“Coming back from two pregnancies, I had to give myself a lot of patience. I wanted to jump straight back in where I left off, but there was a lot of building to do again. This season showed me that the speed is back, and I am really looking forward to getting back into the 400m,” she said.
Motherhood, she added, has given her a renewed sense of purpose in athletics.
“Having my kids there has given me a different purpose in the sport. I get to show them what mummy does, and hopefully inspire them,” she said.
Looking ahead to the Los Angeles Olympics, Miller-Uibo said she intends to focus on only one event, although the final decision between the 200m and 400m remains open.
“For LA, I am only going to do one event, and we are not sure which one yet. I have always wanted an Olympic medal in the 200m, but at the same time, no one has ever won three in the 400m. So we will play with both and make that decision,” she said.
With more than 41,000 participants expected at the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, Miller-Uibo also praised the determination required to complete the 21.1-kilometre race. She said the event demands not only physical endurance but also a strong mindset and a willingness to challenge personal limits.
“The half marathon takes a lot of guts and a really strong mentality. Everyone who runs it is challenging themselves beyond how fast they can go, and kudos to all of them,” she said.
The Olympic champion also revealed that running a marathon remains one of her long-term ambitions after she retires from competitive athletics.
Offering advice to Indian athletes, Miller-Uibo urged them to remain patient through injuries and setbacks, stay committed to their training and maintain faith in their abilities.
“Just know that it takes time. Injuries and setbacks come with the territory, but sometimes a setback is exactly what puts you in position for a great comeback. Keep working hard, have fun with it, and believe in yourself and in all the training you have done to go out there and accomplish your dreams,” she said.
Miller-Uibo won the women’s 400m Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, becoming only the second woman, after France’s Marie-José Pérec, to successfully defend the Olympic title in the event. She added the world championship crown at Eugene in 2022.
The 21st edition of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, promoted by Procam International, will start from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
