Nearly 500 terrorists are reportedly waiting at launchpads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) for an opportunity to infiltrate Jammu and Kashmir, prompting Indian security agencies to maintain a heightened alert ahead of the peak winter season, according to intelligence inputs cited by officials.
The reported build-up comes amid tighter security along the India-Pakistan border, which officials say has made infiltration attempts increasingly difficult. Intelligence assessments indicate that the terrorists have been divided into small groups of three to four to reduce the chances of detection by Indian security forces.
An Intelligence Bureau official said activity at the launchpads had increased as winter approached, with previous infiltration attempts reportedly thwarted by enhanced border security.
Infiltration attempts traditionally intensify before heavy snowfall blocks routes through the mountainous terrain. However, officials are also assessing whether the current activity could be a diversion or a precursor to attempts during December and the peak winter period.
According to the intelligence inputs, terrorists linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen have allegedly been provided with specialised high-altitude equipment to operate in snow-covered areas. An official claimed that some of the equipment was similar to gear used by the Pakistan Army in the Siachen region.
Officials further alleged that Pakistani Army personnel had been deployed near launchpads to facilitate infiltration attempts. Intelligence agencies are also monitoring reports of drone use to map possible routes and track the movement of Indian troops.
Security officials believe the combination of specialised equipment, surveillance technology and assistance near launchpads could enable infiltration attempts even during severe winter conditions.
The Indian Army has reportedly strengthened precautionary measures following the intelligence inputs and is maintaining a high state of alert along vulnerable stretches of the border.
Officials have also linked the reported urgency to Pakistan’s internal security challenges, with unrest in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Balochistan. They suspect that successful infiltration attempts could lead to attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and divert attention from Pakistan’s domestic difficulties.
Security agencies remain concerned that attempts may continue despite heavy snowfall, with the reported preparations suggesting that the threat could persist beyond the usual pre-winter infiltration window.
