Pop icon Madonna has shared an emotional birthday tribute to her daughter Lourdes Leon, recalling a frightening childbirth experience that culminated in an emergency Caesarean section after 18 hours of labour.
Lourdes, Madonna’s eldest daughter with actor Carlos Leon, turned 30. The singer marked the occasion on Instagram with a series of throwback photographs tracing her daughter’s journey from childhood to adulthood, accompanied by a deeply personal note about their bond.
Recalling the delivery, Madonna said Lourdes’ chin was tilted upwards in the birth canal, leaving her stuck, while the baby’s heartbeat began to slow after 18 hours of labour. An emergency C-section became the only option, she wrote.
Madonna also recalled the unusual media attention surrounding the birth, describing helicopters and news crews hovering above the hospital in East Los Angeles.
“Your birth was dramatic. Like our lives,” she wrote, reflecting on what she described as a profound, almost biblical connection between mother and daughter.
Calling Lourdes her “Little Star”, Madonna urged her to remember her identity, continue dreaming and never forget her roots. She also wrote that she would risk everything for her daughter, describing them as “two sides of the same coin”.
Lourdes responded to the tribute in the comments section, writing, “You’re the one that I think about all day, love you”.
Singer Katy Perry praised the post, calling motherhood a “true spiritual experience”, while actress Amy Schumer also responded to the photographs and tribute.
Lourdes has built a career of her own in fashion and music. She has modelled for major brands, trained as a dancer and pursued music, making her debut as a recording artiste in 2022.
