At 7:29 p.m. on August 15, 2020, Mahendra Singh Dhoni brought an end to one of the most celebrated international careers in Indian cricket, announcing his retirement after 15 years at the highest level.
There was no elaborate farewell or press conference. Dhoni made the announcement through a social media post featuring photographs from his cricketing career, accompanied by Mukesh’s song Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shair Hoon.
“Thanks a lot for your love and support throughout. From 1929 hrs, consider me retired,” Dhoni wrote.
The decision marked the end of an extraordinary international journey that began with his debut in December 2004 and saw him become the only captain to win all three major ICC limited-overs trophies.
Dhoni led India to the inaugural T20 World Cup title in 2007 before guiding the team to its historic 2011 ODI World Cup triumph. He famously sealed the final against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium with a six.
His captaincy legacy was completed in 2013 when India won the Champions Trophy. Dhoni captained India in 60 Tests, recording 27 victories, 18 defeats and 15 draws. In T20 Internationals, he led the side in 72 matches, winning 41.
As a batter, Dhoni scored 10,773 runs in 350 ODIs and 4,876 runs in 90 Tests. He also played 98 T20Is. Behind the stumps, he finished his international career with 829 dismissals.
His final international match came in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.
Retirement from international cricket did not end Dhoni’s association with the sport. He continued playing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and remained one of the tournament’s biggest figures. Under his leadership, CSK won five IPL titles, with the latest coming in 2023.
For millions of fans, August 15 remains synonymous with the moment Dhoni quietly closed one chapter of his career. His legacy is defined not only by trophies and memorable finishes, but also by the composure that became his trademark in Indian cricket.
