Member of Parliament from Amritsar, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, once again strongly raised a critical issue related to public safety in Parliament, focusing on fire safety and emergency preparedness at petrol pumps located in Amritsar district and other border belt areas of the country.
Highlighting the sensitivity of these regions, MP Aujla sought detailed responses from the central government regarding safety mechanisms in place to prevent fire incidents and explosions at fuel outlets.
MP Aujla emphasized that accidents such as fires or explosions at petrol pumps not only cause massive damage to property but also pose a serious threat to human lives, particularly in densely populated areas where residential colonies and schools are located in close proximity.
He questioned whether the government has conducted a comprehensive assessment of both existing and newly established petrol pumps to ensure the availability of modern firefighting systems, trained personnel, and effective emergency response mechanisms.
Raising further concerns, MP Aujla asked whether regular mock drills and risk assessment exercises are being conducted in rural and border areas so that emergency situations can be handled promptly and efficiently. He stressed that preparedness is crucial in preventing major disasters and minimizing loss of life and property.
In its response, the central government stated that strict safety norms have been laid down by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization.
According to the government, petrol pumps are mandated to maintain fire protection systems, emergency control arrangements, and disaster management plans. It was also informed that oil marketing companies regularly conduct safety audits, inspections, employee training programs, and mock drills to ensure compliance with prescribed safety standards.
Reacting to the reply, MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla asserted that merely framing rules is not enough and that their strict implementation on the ground is essential. He underlined that no compromise can be made when it comes to public safety in a border district like Amritsar, warning that any negligence could put countless lives at risk.
MP Aujla further stated that he will continue to raise this issue at all appropriate forums to ensure that safety measures at petrol pumps are not confined to paperwork but are effectively enforced at every level.
MP Aujla’s initiative is being seen as a significant step towards strengthening public safety, as it not only drew the government’s attention to the safety infrastructure at petrol pumps but also firmly placed the concerns of residents living in border and sensitive areas on the floor of Parliament.
