The family of a youth who died at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has alleged medical negligence and called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The family members raised the issue on social media from the hospital premises on Sunday, urging state authorities to investigate the matter and improve the delivery of healthcare services at government hospitals.
According to hospital sources, the deceased, identified as Pritam Roy, was brought to the trauma care centre around 5.30 p.m. on Saturday after sustaining serious injuries in a road accident.
Roy, a resident of Rajchandrapur in Howrah district, had suffered fractures to both leg bones and the left pelvic bone.
Hospital sources said Roy subsequently went into haemorrhagic shock due to excessive blood loss and died at around 10.30 p.m. on Saturday.
However, a family member, Shouvik Sarkar, on Sunday accused the hospital authorities of negligence in treatment and demanded accountability.
RG Kar Hospital Superintendent Saptarshi Chatterjee said the complaint was being investigated.
The incident has once again brought scrutiny on the functioning and infrastructure of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which has faced allegations of administrative and security lapses in the past.
Earlier in March, Arup Banerjee, a resident of Dum Dum, died after reportedly becoming trapped in a lift at the RG Kar Trauma Care building. Allegations of negligence in surveillance were subsequently raised against the hospital authorities.
RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was also at the centre of nationwide protests following the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the hospital on August 9, 2024. The incident triggered widespread protests, night vigils, hunger strikes and demonstrations, with doctors and civil society groups raising concerns over security and infrastructure.
Following discussions between the administration and protesting junior doctors, assurances were given regarding improvements in infrastructure, surveillance and other facilities.
The latest allegation has again raised questions about the implementation of such measures, with the deceased’s family seeking a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding Roy’s death.
