Eastern Railway’s Sealdah Division will extend its air-conditioned EMU local train service from Barasat to Bangaon from August 20, providing commuters on the route with a more comfortable suburban travel option.
The AC EMU service currently operates between Sealdah and Barasat and will now be extended to Bangaon, a border town in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district located about 79 km from Sealdah.
Bangaon is an important trading centre along the India-Bangladesh border and has an Integrated Check Post (ICP).
The extended service will operate six days a week, from Monday to Saturday. The train will depart Sealdah at 10:33 a.m. and reach Barasat at 11:14 a.m. It will halt at major stations including Bamangachhi, Duttapukur, Bira, Ashoknagar Road, Habra, Maslandapur, Gobardanga, Thakurnagar and Chandpara before reaching Bangaon Junction at 12:23 p.m.
The Down Bangaon-Sealdah AC EMU will depart Bangaon at 12:35 p.m. and reach Sealdah at 2:25 p.m., with scheduled halts along the route.
Sealdah Divisional Railway Manager Rajeev Saxena said passenger comfort and convenience remained the railway’s top priority.
“Extension of the AC local services to Bangaon directly addresses the growing demand from daily suburban commuters, ensuring that their everyday travel across North 24 Parganas is faster, more modern, and more pleasant,” he said.
The Sealdah Division introduced AC EMU services in August 2025 and currently operates two AC EMU rakes. The fully air-conditioned trains feature stainless-steel coaches, wider sealed vestibule gangways connecting all 12 coaches, automatic sliding doors and large sealed glass windows.
The rake has a seating capacity of around 1,100 passengers. Other features include CCTV surveillance, GPS-based LED passenger information displays, announcement systems, modular luggage racks and wear-resistant rubber flooring.
The train doors are automatically operated and open only after the train stops at a station. They remain closed while the train is moving, with door operations controlled by the motorman or conducting motorman.
Eastern Railway is also planning to procure additional AC EMU rakes for deployment on other routes.
