Padma Shri Jatinder Singh Shunty, member of the Punjab State and Union Territory Chandigarh Human Rights Commission, on Saturday urged people to come forward with information about individuals and gangs allegedly cheating people through fake visas, forged offer letters, fraudulent marriages and promises of sending them abroad.
Shunty made the appeal while conducting public hearings during human rights awareness camps organised at Bhartiya Model Senior Secondary School in Rampura and Star View Resort in Bhagat Bhai Ka.
The camps were held as part of an awareness drive against drug abuse and to provide a platform for people to raise grievances related to human rights. Officials from various government departments, social organisations and members of the public participated in the programmes.
Shunty said the Human Rights Commission was committed to protecting citizens’ rights, creating awareness and ensuring timely justice for victims. He said efforts were being made to expand the Commission’s outreach so that people could approach it without fear when they believed their rights had been violated.
He also interacted with students at the Rampura school as part of the anti-drug campaign and urged them to stay away from drugs while spreading awareness about their harmful effects.
The Commission member said complaints relating to human rights violations could be submitted to the Commission in writing. Complainants can also send their application, a copy of their Aadhaar card and a copy of the complaint lodged with the police or another institution to the Commission’s WhatsApp number 9855475547.
Shunty said strict legal action would be pursued against gangs involved in cheating people through fake visas, fake employment offer letters, fraudulent marriages and false promises of overseas travel. He urged people to provide information about such activities to the authorities.
During the camps, Shunty heard grievances brought by members of the public and directed the concerned officials to take necessary action. He also held discussions with officials from various departments and representatives of social organisations on issues concerning human rights.
He appreciated the Bathinda district administration’s public welfare initiatives and called upon officials to remain sensitive and vigilant while addressing public grievances. He also encouraged the administration to coordinate with social organisations and NGOs to strengthen welfare activities.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Kanchan, SDM Rampura Balkaran Singh, District Health Officer Dr Usha Goel, District Programme Officer Pankaj Kumar, SP Bathinda Aswant Dhaliwal, Nagar Panchayat Bhagat Bhai Ka president Jagseer Singh and Satish Kumar of Lifecare Foundation, along with other officials and representatives, attended the programmes.
