Rapper Jay-Z has opened up about how his relationship with Beyoncé helped him become more emotionally expressive, admitting that he was “immature” and afraid of vulnerability before they began dating.
Discussing his 2017 song 4:44 in his new documentary JAY-Z in 8, the rapper reflected on the deeply personal track, in which he addresses womanising, fatherhood and his relationship with Beyoncé.
Jay-Z said listening to the song remains difficult because of how openly he confronted aspects of his past. He also recalled how he struggled to express his feelings when his relationship with Beyoncé began.
“I was so immature and so afraid to be vulnerable that I like this person. I like this woman,” he said.
He explained that instead of directly asking Beyoncé to become his girlfriend, he used a more indirect approach because he was uncomfortable with emotional vulnerability.
Jay-Z also acknowledged that Beyoncé matured faster than he did, despite being 12 years younger. He said his relationship with her ultimately helped him become more open and expressive.
Earlier this month, Jay-Z said he felt “super inspired” by Beyoncé, praising her fearless approach to life and revealing that he draws inspiration from her outlook.
Jay-Z and Beyoncé began dating in the early 2000s and married in 2008. They have three children.
