The BWF World Championships return to India after 17 years, with New Delhi set to host badminton’s premier individual tournament from August 17 to 23. The seven-day event will be staged at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium and will feature the world’s leading players across men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
India last hosted the championships in 2009 in Hyderabad. The 2026 edition will see 64 players each in the men’s and women’s singles draws, along with 48 pairs across the three doubles disciplines.
Indian badminton has enjoyed sustained success at the World Championships, winning at least one medal at every edition since 2011. The country’s first medal came in 1983, when Prakash Padukone won men’s singles bronze.
Among the major attractions this year is the potential first-round clash between defending champion and top seed Shi Yuqi of China and India’s rising star Ayush Shetty.
Former world champion PV Sindhu, who has won five World Championships medals, will also be aiming to add another medal to her tally.
