Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has opened up about her relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin following their divorce, saying the former couple were determined to remain a family for the sake of their children.

Paltrow and Martin, who share two children, Apple, 22, and Moses, 20, announced in 2014 that they were ending their marriage. Their separation became widely discussed after they described it as a “conscious uncoupling”.

Speaking on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Paltrow explained that the term emerged from their efforts to find a way to separate without allowing the breakdown of their relationship to negatively affect their children.

The actress said she spoke to friends who had grown up with divorced parents to understand the experiences that had caused them lasting pain. She recalled hearing about tense family occasions, parents avoiding each other and children being caught between them.

Paltrow said those conversations made her determined to ensure that her own children would not experience a similar situation. She said she wanted them to be able to have family occasions where both parents could sit together at the same table.

Paltrow and Martin subsequently sought the help of a therapist, who introduced them to the concept that eventually shaped their approach to separation.

“Chris and I had this therapist that was really brilliant, and he sort of introduced us to the concept and we just made a commitment to really put the kids first,” she said, adding that this meant remaining a family even though they were no longer a couple.

She acknowledged that maintaining that arrangement was not always easy. After the family moved from London to Los Angeles, Paltrow and Martin had committed to having brunch together with their children every Sunday.

Recalling one particularly tense occasion, she said the two stepped outside, decided not to let the situation escalate, hugged and fist-bumped before returning to brunch.

Paltrow is now married to producer Brad Falchuk.

Earlier this year, she also recalled on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast how the intense media attention surrounding her “conscious uncoupling” affected her professional life. Paltrow said she was dropped from a film project after the distributor reportedly considered the circumstances surrounding her divorce too controversial at the time.
