Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday criticised the Congress after a mimicry performance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme in Indore triggered a political controversy.

Rijiju shared on X a Congress post featuring a clip of the performance and wrote, “Congress Party has become a Party of Comedians & Jokers! They are out forever… RIP.”

The performance featured comedian and social media content creator Pulkit Mani mimicking Prime Minister Modi’s mannerisms, including his characteristic laugh, hand gestures and the way he greets and embraces people. Gandhi was seen laughing during the performance.

The act took place during the student-focused programme addressed by Rahul Gandhi, where he spoke about issues concerning students, including unemployment and examination irregularities.

The performance drew criticism from BJP leaders, who questioned the use of mimicry at an event focused on student concerns and Gandhi’s reaction to it.

Maharashtra BJP MLA Ram Kadam said mimicry could provide entertainment but argued that discussions on students’ issues should focus on policy, hard work and opportunities.

“When will Rahul Gandhi himself reflect on the fact that mimicry can provide entertainment? But if the country has to move forward and we have to talk about the upliftment of students, then it is necessary to discuss policy, hard work and opportunities,” Kadam told IANS.

He also criticised Gandhi over his public campaigns and alleged that he had misled students and youth.

Earlier, Bihar Minister Ram Kripal Yadav also criticised the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme and Congress over its handling of student issues.

Speaking to IANS, Yadav said students had struggled to make their voices heard despite Congress having been in power for decades. He referred to the student movement in Bihar and claimed that it had contributed to the Congress losing power in Bihar and several other states.

The controversy over the mimicry performance comes amid a wider political exchange between the BJP and Congress over Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme and the issues raised by students.
