Veteran actress Jaya Prada once recalled her experiences of working with some of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars, including her candid take on Dharmendra’s flirtatious nature and Rajesh Khanna’s late arrivals on film sets.
An old clip from one of Kapil Sharma’s television shows has resurfaced online, in which Jaya Prada was asked about the actor who used to flirt the most.
When Kapil Sharma asked her, “So, ma’am, who used to flirt the most?”, the actress initially hesitated before naming Dharmendra. She laughed after giving her answer.
The conversation then turned to actors who were known for arriving late on sets. Jaya Prada recalled that Rajesh Khanna would often arrive much later than the scheduled reporting time.
She explained that she had been accustomed to starting work early during her years in South Indian cinema, where she would often be on set by 7 a.m. After moving into Hindi films, she said, her reporting time would generally be around 9 a.m., while Khanna would sometimes arrive much later.
According to her recollection, Khanna would arrive around 8 p.m., have a vada pav and then complete a brief shooting schedule before pack-up at around 9 p.m.
Jaya Prada also recalled the demanding schedules she handled during the peak of her career, including working five shifts a day with leading stars.
Speaking about her work on the film Sharaabi, she described travelling from Ooty by train in the evening to Chennai, freshening up at the airport and then taking a flight while doing her make-up on board.
She would then travel to Coimbatore to continue shooting.
“I couldn’t refuse them,” she recalled, explaining that she had worked with major stars in both Hindi and South Indian cinema.
Jaya Prada said that during her early career she was only 16 or 17 and felt overwhelmed while working alongside established icons such as N.T. Rama Rao and Rajkumar.
She described those hectic schedules as difficult but also something she looked back on with pride.
