India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana added another milestone to her career by becoming the leading run-scorer in T20I cricket across both men’s and women’s cricket on Sunday.
Mandhana achieved the feat during India’s Asian Games semifinal against Bangladesh at Korogi Sports Park, scoring a quick 37 off 19 balls. She surpassed former New Zealand cricketer Suzie Bates to move to the top of the overall T20I run-scoring list.
Mandhana now has 4,788 runs from 171 innings. She entered the match with 4,751 runs from 170 innings and needed just eight runs to overtake Bates.
The Indian vice-captain reached the landmark early in her innings, hitting two fours among her first seven balls along with two singles.
Mandhana and Bates had already moved past Pakistan batter Babar Azam, the leading run-scorer in men’s T20Is. Mandhana has now extended her lead over both Bates and Azam.

Mandhana had also recently become the leading run-scorer in women’s international cricket.
During the Asia Cup, she surpassed former India captain Mithali Raj’s tally of 10,868 international runs after scoring 124 against Hong Kong. The knock also took her to 18 international centuries, the most in women’s international cricket at that stage, moving her past Australia great Meg Lanning. South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt later equalled the century record.
In the Asian Games semifinal, India opted to bat first against Bangladesh as the Women in Blue looked to defend the gold medal they won at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
India had defeated hosts Japan in the quarterfinal to advance to the last four.
