India’s women’s table tennis team staged a spirited comeback to beat Singapore 3-2 in their second Group F tie at the Asian Games, while the men’s team suffered a 0-3 defeat against Iran in their second group outing on Sunday.
The Indian women’s team had earlier opened their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Indonesia. After their first two ties, India moved to the top of Group F with four points and will face Pakistan in their final group-stage match on Monday.
Against Singapore, Yashaswini Ghorpade gave India an early advantage with a 3-1 victory over Jian Zeng. Sreeja Akula was then pushed to the limit by Ming Loy in a five-game contest, eventually losing 2-3 as Singapore levelled the tie.
Zhao Tan subsequently defeated Diya Chitale in four games to put Singapore ahead 2-1.
With India needing to win both remaining matches, Sreeja produced a strong response in her second outing. After losing the opening game 6-11, she won the next three 11-3, 11-7, 11-4 to beat her opponent 3-1 and bring India level at 2-2.
Yashaswini then returned for the deciding match and held her nerve in a tense five-game encounter. She lost the opening game 5-11 but fought back to take the next two 11-8, 12-10. After Singapore won the fourth game 11-4, the decider went down to the wire before Yashaswini held her composure to win 11-9 and seal the tie for India.
In the men’s competition, India began their Group F campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over Indonesia.
Sathiyan Gnanasekaran defeated Muhammad Negara 3-0, while Manav Thakkar overcame Muhammad Junindra 3-2. Manush Shah then completed the clean sweep with a 3-0 victory over Affan Pratama.
