US Vice President JD Vance returned to his home state of Ohio to campaign for Indian American Republican Vivek Ramaswamy on the eve of the midterm elections, as a final New York Times/Siena poll showed the gubernatorial candidate trailing Democrat Amy Acton by six percentage points.

The survey of likely voters, released by the Siena Research Institute, put Acton at 49 per cent and Ramaswamy at 43 per cent. The margin of error was 4.4 percentage points.

The same poll showed Democrat Sherrod Brown leading Republican Senator Jon Husted 49 per cent to 44 per cent in the state’s special Senate election.

“In the much-watched race in Ohio, Acton leads Ramaswamy by six points,” said Don Levy, executive director of the Siena Research Institute.

The latest figures indicate a widening gap compared with the institute’s previous Ohio poll, conducted between September 22 and October 1, which had Acton ahead by 49 per cent to 45 per cent.

Vance headlined a Republican rally at a hangar at Toledo Express Airport in Swanton on Monday, sharing the stage with Ramaswamy and Husted.

In a video posted on X, Vance criticised the Democratic Party, saying it had moved away from the values it represented when he was growing up in Ohio. He described Democrats as weak on crime and border security and accused them of embracing extreme and socialist positions.

Urging voters to support the Republican candidates, Vance said they would fight for workers, lower taxes and what he described as common-sense values.

Ramaswamy, in his address to the rally, promised to work towards lower living costs, higher pay and safer streets. He later took his campaign message to Cleveland, pledging cuts in property taxes and electricity bills and a tougher approach to crime.

The Republican also attacked Acton over a weekend confrontation between crowds and police in Cincinnati, accusing her of comparing law enforcement officers to the Ku Klux Klan and warning that her election would have consequences for policing across Ohio.

Ohio has not elected a Democratic governor since 2006, making the contest a closely watched test for both parties ahead of the midterm vote.
