US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping used military honours, conciliatory rhetoric and a lavish White House state dinner to stabilise ties between the world’s two largest economies, but their Washington summit produced measures to manage competition rather than resolve the fundamental differences between them.
Trump personally received Xi at Joint Base Andrews, an unusual gesture for a visiting head of state. The formal welcome, military display and subsequent White House ceremony underscored the importance both sides attached to the visit.
Trump described the relationship as a “truly great friendship” based on mutual respect and the interests of both countries, while saying discussions would cover trade, security, technology and artificial intelligence.
Xi, meanwhile, emphasised the need for guardrails. He called for candid dialogue, stronger government-to-government contacts and regular military communication, saying China and the US should avoid “conflict and confrontation”.
The clearest immediate outcome was in trade. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the existing tariff truce had been extended until January 10, giving Washington and Beijing additional time to address tariffs, rare-earth supplies and other economic issues. The extension provides breathing room but leaves larger trade disagreements unresolved.
Artificial intelligence was another major theme. Xi said China and the US had the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for the benefit of society and keep its development under human control. The US has also been discussing a mechanism for notifying each other about significant AI-related incidents, although no binding AI agreement or verification framework was announced at the summit.
The differences were more apparent on strategic issues including Taiwan and Iran. While the two leaders sought to keep communication channels open, the summit did not produce a publicly announced settlement of those disputes. The US and China also remain engaged in competition over advanced technology, AI chips, military capabilities and influence in Asia.
The state visit was also marked by carefully choreographed cultural diplomacy. First Lady Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan visited the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, while the White House dinner brought together senior officials and prominent technology executives.
At the dinner, Trump presented Xi with a bald-eagle sculpture and toasted a future of “harmony, peace, and success”. Xi said the talks had produced “common understanding on many issues” and argued that China’s national rejuvenation and Trump’s effort to make America great again could be mutually reinforcing.
For Trump, the summit highlighted his preference for direct leader-to-leader diplomacy. For Xi, the elaborate reception demonstrated Washington’s willingness to engage Beijing at the highest level despite strategic distrust.
The visit therefore restored high-level contact and established language for managing competition, while leaving the underlying rivalry largely intact.
The outcome also matters for India. US-China relations have implications for New Delhi’s security environment, including its border dispute with China and participation in the Quad, as well as global technology, energy and critical-mineral supply chains.
Xi’s Washington visit was his first to the US capital in more than a decade. The two leaders had met several times previously, including during encounters in the US, Europe and Asia.
