The Lahore High Court on Thursday rejected a request to immediately suspend the detention orders issued against former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sisters Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi.
During the hearing, lawyers for the two women argued that they were “non-political” and had been detained without justification. They also told the court that Uzma Khan had already been acquitted in a case registered against her and sought immediate suspension of the detention orders.
The court, however, decided to seek reports from the relevant authorities before ruling on the suspension request. Notices were issued to the respondents, including the Lahore Deputy Commissioner, Capital City Police Officer, Home Department Secretary and Kot Lakhpat jail superintendent, seeking their responses.
The petition followed the arrest of Imran Khan’s three sisters — Aleema Khan, Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan — after the Lahore Deputy Commissioner issued 30-day detention orders under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance.
The orders were issued ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s planned September 27 protest demanding the release of Imran Khan, who has remained in prison since August 2023 following convictions that his party has described as politically motivated.
The Punjab government has also imposed a 13-day ban on public gatherings across the province ahead of the planned protest. Under the notification, gatherings, processions and assemblies of five or more people have been prohibited in public places, roads and open spaces. The restrictions also prohibit carrying or displaying weapons and encouraging participation in unlawful gatherings.
The order exempts weddings, funeral prayers, burials and gatherings at mosques and other places of worship. The Punjab government said the restrictions were imposed after law enforcement and intelligence agencies received information about an imminent security threat, including the possibility of attacks by militant groups on public gatherings.
On Monday, Imran Khan’s son Kasim Khan condemned the detention of his aunts Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi. In a post on X, he alleged that his aunts and cousins had been taken from their homes without explanation and described the action as “criminal behaviour”, urging the international community to intervene.
