Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Thursday approved the direct recruitment of 450 Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) in the Punjab Police, describing the move as part of the state government’s ‘Mission Rozgar’ initiative and its efforts to strengthen policing.
Mann approved the recruitment while chairing a meeting to review the functioning of the Home Department. He said the recruitment would provide educated and eligible youth an opportunity to join the Police Department through a transparent and merit-based selection process, while also augmenting manpower to address law-and-order and security challenges.
“An efficient, responsive and adequately staffed police force is essential for maintaining law and order, combating crime and ensuring the safety and security of the people,” Mann said, adding that the government was committed to strengthening the force through fresh recruitment, timely promotions, modernisation and improved service conditions.
The Chief Minister said the Punjab Police has a sanctioned strength of 6,810 ASI posts across five cadres — District Police, Armed Police, Bureau of Investigation, Intelligence and Technical Support Service.
He said the government had undertaken an assessment of existing and likely vacancies to plan recruitment and promotions systematically. Approximately 70 per cent of vacancies in four cadres are likely to be filled through promotion, while the corresponding proportion in the Armed Cadre is around 90 per cent, he said.
After taking these requirements into account, the government approved the direct recruitment of 450 ASIs, Mann said.
“This recruitment will provide an important opportunity to educated and eligible youth of Punjab to join the Police Department through a transparent and merit-based selection process,” he said, directing the concerned departments to complete the necessary formalities expeditiously.
Mann said the recruitment process would remain fair, transparent and strictly in accordance with prescribed rules. He said strengthening the police force was not merely about increasing its numbers but also about ensuring that personnel had the manpower and institutional support required to perform their responsibilities effectively.
The Chief Minister said a stronger police force would improve policing at the grassroots level and enable the department to respond more effectively to emerging law-and-order and security challenges. He also directed senior officers to maintain close coordination and ensure that the recruitment process moved forward without unnecessary delay.
Mann reiterated that recruitment and promotions would be carried out systematically, transparently and strictly on merit, with the objective of building a stronger and more responsive police force in Punjab.
