The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Thursday demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar within 48 hours and warned of a nationwide agitation if he does not step down.
Addressing a press conference, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said the party would launch a nationwide protest if Kumar failed to resign within the deadline.
“If within 48 hours Gyanesh Kumar doesn’t resign, the Cockroach Janata Party will start a nationwide agitation. We won’t step back till the time Gyanesh Kumar resigns,” Dipke said.
Dipke’s remarks came amid reports of differences within the Election Commission of India (ECI) over decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Launching a sharp attack on the CEC, Dipke accused Kumar of undermining democracy and alleged that the Election Commission’s functioning under him had affected voters’ rights.
He alleged that the electoral system had shifted from allowing citizens to choose their government to a situation where the government was allegedly determining who could vote.
“These are serious allegations made by Dipke and were not independently established in the statements provided,” he said while reiterating his criticism of the Election Commission.
Dipke also referred to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, claiming that the BJP’s failure to secure a majority and subsequent defeats of several political leaders indicated a broader pattern.
He alleged that large numbers of voters had been deleted from constituencies associated with political leaders, citing claims involving West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Delhi.
According to Dipke, 50,000 votes were deleted from the constituency of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while she lost by around 15,000 votes. He further claimed that one lakh votes were deleted from former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s constituency, where he said Stalin lost by around 45,000 votes.
In Delhi, Dipke alleged that 40,000 votes were deleted from former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s constituency and claimed that Kejriwal lost by around 4,000-5,000 votes.
Dipke also accused the Election Commission of playing a role in the split of Shiv Sena (UBT) and the allocation of its election symbol, alleging that the poll panel had favoured a “proxy party”.
He further alleged that the ECI had acted in favour of the BJP and held Kumar responsible for what he described as attempts to keep the ruling party in power.
CJP co-convenor Saurav Das also criticised the electoral system, describing it as “corrupt” and “broken” and calling for fundamental change.
Das said the right to vote was an important tool available to citizens to bring about political change.
“If your right to vote, which is the only tool you have to bring about change in your life, is taken away from you or stolen from you, then how will change come?” he asked.
