Indian-origin technology leaders Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai and Sanjay Mehrotra were among the prominent corporate figures invited to US President Donald Trump’s state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House.
The guest list brought together executives from some of the world’s biggest technology companies as Washington and Beijing sought areas of cooperation in artificial intelligence while remaining engaged in a broader competition over advanced computing and semiconductor technology.
Nadella is chairman and CEO of Microsoft, Pichai is CEO of Google and its parent company Alphabet, while Mehrotra heads memory-chip maker Micron Technology.
Second Lady Usha Vance and Vice President JD Vance were also among the guests, while Sangeeta Mehrotra, wife of Sanjay Mehrotra, was included on the White House guest list.
Other technology executives invited to the dinner included Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and OpenAI President and co-founder Greg Brockman. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Zoom CEO Eric Yuan, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon and Dell CEO Michael Dell were also on the list.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin, AMD CEO Lisa Su and David Sacks, co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, were among the other technology figures invited.
The prominent presence of technology executives came as Trump and Xi placed artificial intelligence among the key subjects in discussions between the world’s two largest economies.
During his welcome remarks on Thursday, Trump said the two leaders would discuss security, technology and superintelligence, adding that decisions in these areas could influence peace and prosperity for decades.
Xi said China and the US had both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI effectively, while ensuring that its development remained under human control and benefited people.
The dinner also brought together business leaders from banking, manufacturing, aerospace, energy and pharmaceuticals. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg, Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet, General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods and GE Aerospace CEO Larry Culp were among the invitees.
Senior Trump administration officials attending included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Xi’s delegation included Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Zheng Shanjie, chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission.
The dinner followed a day of ceremonial events and closed-door talks at the White House. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump received Xi and Peng Liyuan at the North Portico shortly after 7 p.m.
The menu combined American ingredients with Chinese influences and began with the sparkling wine served during the “Toast to Peace” between then-US President Richard Nixon and Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai in Beijing in 1972.
Technology remains a major area of US-China competition, spanning advanced computer chips, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, AI models and access to computing capacity.
Nadella, Pichai and Mehrotra were born in India and later built their professional careers in the United States. Their presence at the state dinner brought three prominent members of the Indian diaspora together at a high-profile gathering of political and corporate leaders.
