Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Bishnu Adhikari was arrested in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, in connection with cases involving alleged extortion, attempted land grabbing through intimidation, attempt to murder and offences under the Arms Act, police said.
Adhikari, who is associated with the Indian National Trinamool Trade Congress (INTTUC) in Naihati, North 24 Parganas, was arrested by Naihati police on Wednesday after investigators traced him to Indore. He was subsequently brought to Naihati on transit remand and produced before a Barrackpore court, which remanded him to police custody.
According to police, complaints of extortion, attempting to take possession of land by intimidation and attempt to murder had been filed against Adhikari around six weeks earlier. He had allegedly been absconding since then.
Police said information gathered during the investigation led them to Indore, following which a team from Naihati conducted a raid and arrested him.
Adhikari is known in local political circles as being close to TMC leader and Barrackpore MP Partha Bhowmick, according to reports. He is also associated with the party’s trade union organisation in Naihati.
Following news of his arrest, BJP workers and supporters gathered outside Naihati police station. They alleged that Adhikari had been involved in attacks on BJP workers during the 2021 and 2024 political phases in the area and demanded strict action against him.
BJP workers also alleged that Adhikari faced multiple accusations relating to property grabbing and intimidation. Local BJP worker Mantu De claimed that several party workers had been unable to remain in the area since 2021 and alleged that some had been attacked.
Another BJP worker, Surjit Haldar, alleged that Adhikari was a close associate of Partha Bhowmick and had been involved in incidents of political violence.
Adhikari, however, told the court that he was unaware of the allegations against him.
The allegations against Adhikari remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
