The Central Crime Branch (CCB) has summoned three Tamil Nadu police officers who were part of the earlier investigation into a child sexual abuse case against Gem Granites businessman R. Veeramani, seeking explanations for the decision to recommend closure of the case.
Assistant Commissioner Yasmin, who had served in the anti-vice unit, along with Inspectors Mahesh Kumar and Rajalakshmi, have been asked to appear before investigators for questioning.
The CCB is examining how the complaint was assessed, what evidence was collected during the initial enquiry and the basis on which the previous investigation team submitted its closure report.
A complaint against Veeramani was registered in October 2025. Police subsequently sought to close the case, but the court declined to accept the conclusion and ordered a fresh investigation. The renewed probe later resulted in the arrest of Veeramani under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was subsequently lodged in Puzhal prison.
Police also arrested Shanthi and her husband, Mahendra Simhan, on allegations that they facilitated the alleged abuse. Veeramani’s former aide, Ganesan, has also been arrested and remanded in custody.
The latest questioning of the three officers forms part of the investigation that followed the court’s scrutiny of the original police findings. Investigators are examining whether material evidence was overlooked, relevant leads were not pursued or there were grounds for recommending closure.
The CCB is also probing allegations about Veeramani’s conduct over an extended period. Claims that the alleged abuse began as early as 2003 and continued for around 23 years remain allegations under investigation, and the duration and details have not been established by a court. Police have not publicly disclosed the number of alleged victims or incidents involved.
The summons issued to the officers do not, by themselves, establish any misconduct on their part, and no findings against them have been announced.
The investigation will now seek to establish both the allegations against Veeramani and the circumstances surrounding the earlier decision to close the case. Those arrested remain accused at this stage, with the matter subject to further investigation and court proceedings.
