A 57-year-old Sub-Inspector of Police died after being struck by a speeding two-wheeler while on duty for the Ganesh immersion procession in Hyderabad, police said.
K. Venkanna, posted at Kothagudem II Town Police Station in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, had been deployed in Hyderabad for immersion duty and was stationed at NTR Marg along the banks of Hussain Sagar Lake.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Wednesday when Venkanna was crossing NTR Marg with another police official. A speeding motorcycle hit him, causing injuries to his head and other parts of his body. The rider fled the spot.
Venkanna was initially taken to a private hospital for treatment. He later went to Saifabad Police Station and lodged a complaint before calling a friend and leaving for his native village in Warangal district.
His condition deteriorated in the afternoon, following which he was taken to MGM Hospital in Warangal. Doctors found a blood clot in his brain. He died while undergoing treatment on Wednesday evening.
The accident was captured on CCTV cameras. Police registered a case at Saifabad Police Station and launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the motorcyclist. The motorcycle has been traced, while preliminary investigation indicated that the rider had fled Hyderabad.
Senior police officials expressed shock over Venkanna’s death and conveyed condolences to his family.
Police personnel from across Telangana have been mobilised for Hyderabad’s annual Ganesh immersion procession. Around 30,000 personnel have been deployed for the large-scale procession scheduled for Friday.
