Experts and students came together during a CBSE Talkathon to discuss substance abuse among school students and ways to help young people stay away from drugs and other harmful substances.

The interactive session featured Alka Awasthi, Principal of Mayur School, Noida; Prof. Nand Kumar of the Department of Psychiatry, AIIMS, New Delhi; Anish C, Additional Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau; and Class 12 students Samya and Rohit from PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalayas.

The CBSE Talkathon is a series of live virtual sessions organised by the Central Board of Secondary Education, bringing specialists directly before students and teachers to discuss issues concerning well-being and learning. One such session focused on the Nasha Mukt Yuva (Drug-Free Youth) campaign and the need to build awareness around substance abuse.

Prof. Nand Kumar explained that substances initially affect the brain’s reward system, producing intense pleasure and encouraging repeated use. Over time, this can lead to dependence. He noted that while different substances can damage organs such as the liver, stomach, lungs and throat, the brain is a primary target.

Addressing the belief that occasional alcohol consumption cannot lead to addiction, Anish cautioned that even sporadic use can reinforce associations between a substance and relaxation, potentially replacing healthier ways of coping with stress.

Awasthi stressed that drug use should not be treated as a safe coping mechanism and can develop into dependence.

Nand Kumar said changes in attention, concentration, focus and sleep can occur with dependence and may indicate a need for professional support. He also rejected the misconception that substance use improves concentration.

On supporting friends struggling with harmful habits, Awasthi advised students to respond with empathy and patience while expressing concern clearly. If the friend does not respond, students should approach parents, school counsellors or peer educators. CBSE schools also have peer ambassadors and educators who can identify and report concerns.

The experts emphasised that supportive friendships and school communities can create positive peer influence. Nand Kumar suggested the CALM refusal technique: clearly say no, Leave the situation, use an Excuse if necessary and remain Mindful.

Anish explained that “Nasha Mukt” involves understanding the dangers of drugs and refusing them, thereby reducing demand and limiting their reach among young people.

The session underlined that academic or social pressure should not become a reason for substance use and that seeking help should be viewed as a responsible step rather than a source of shame.
